Fr. Fr. So the first covering that happens, the reason this is done on this day, as weve mentioned in previous episodes, is that this is the day that Yahweh chose to appear visibly in the holy of holies. Fr. Andrew: Yeah, like the altar has be reconciled to God? And then theres this weird And then at the end of Luke: They worshiped him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple, blessing and praising God. Fr. [Laughter]. How does him healing diseases fulfill that? Stephen: In fact, its canonically forbidden to bring livestock into the church. Stephen: This doesnt mean its not historical, because any historian has to choose details to include and details to omit, and will write about things and describe things in certain ways. Stephen: Ruined, yeah. Fr. Andrew: Got you. 35 min; APR 17, 2023; Revelation 12:1-9 Revelation 12:1-9. Dont trust me: read the Torah for yourself. Stephen De Young and Fr. But firstand this is where the English language nerd in me comes leaping outlets talk about this English word, atonement. Okay, so, Fr. So, Fr. Consequently, I greeted the arrival of Fr. Like, Oh, its nice that he wrote some letters. But the Church read these out loud in liturgy and preserved them and theologized on the basis of them, and this is from the beloved apostle who leaned on Christs breast at the Last Supper. Stephen: Right, and then you can add prefixes and suffixes and that kind of thing, but you have a root that is three letters. And, supporting that within the Bible, is also in Leviticus 17:7, which is the very next chapterand remember, the chapter-breaks werent there originally, so this is just a couple paragraphs later at the end of the ritual for the Day of Atonementtheres the commandments that the Israelites are not to continue worshiping the goat-spirits of the wilderness. So it seems to me that Azazel is most likely one of those. So, speaking of that ritual context, then, the rest of what were going to be talking about is the ritual of atonement, the Day of Atonement. Stephen: Yes. Andrew: And hes driven outside of the city. While underscoring the continued need to take into account the historical context that forms the background to the New Testament (at least I got that right), Fr. Well, its Goat Week on The Lord of Spirits podcast! Okay, so, but there was something else also, a connection from John 17. It becomes this mechanism that I sort of get benefited that benefits me, rather than something that I ritually participate in. The Nephilim were said to be a race or a group of people that had distinct physical characteristics of large size and great strength. The Bible only specifies the heights of two people. But if we understand purification just in this kind of reduced sense, without all of this atonement imagery from the Day of Atonement ritual and then the eschatological Day of Atonement, then we can tend to look at Christian life as a kind of self-help program. Fr. Fr. So I dont think they were putting their sins on presbyters. Stephen: Yeah, you dont get much worse than that. We will find that the only reading of the Bible that results in tall tales about "giants" is not a literal one but one which I call a theo-sci-fi eisegetical (pseudo) hermeneutic. Fr. Andrew: Hey, Dan. How the Devil Got His Hooves and Horns: The Origin of the Motif, "The Embarrassing and Alluring Biblical Giant," online at Bible and Interpretation (2 December 2015). Theres a lot of people standing around; this is the person whom were setting apart for this purpose. And then, through the sinning thats going on around them and even within them, they develop this taint where they are made common again. Stephen: Right, its a practicality. But that is a minor detail. Fr. That doesnt make it not historical. But, before we get there, a couple of things we have to say at the very outset: All references to the atonement in the New Testament are explicitly about the Day of Atonement ritual. Stephen: So this isnt transactional, so its not an issue of, like, Oh, well, maybe there were some sins that got missed during the year, so were going to do this sort of catch-all Day of Atonement to pick up those ones that were missed. Those were being done perpetually to cover all of the sinning that was going on, that everyone knew was going on in Israel. I mean, that is just an overarching commandment of the whole Scripture: no idolatry, ever. The book is deeply scholarly and deeply spiritual at the same time. Andrew: Okay, but havent I heard that the goat actually got throne off a cliff? Theres the effect that those sins have on not just the peopleand I think this is a great thing for us to mention especially here because our next couple of episodes are going to be on sacred geography, so were going to be talking about space in particulartheres an effect on the space, on the place. To actually go in there to purify that space. If you have a Facebook account you should probably delete it, but if you cant, like our Facebook page and join our Facebook discussion group where well be your oasis amongst the evils of social media. Fr. YouTube Fr. Stephen: And the way hes said to do that, in 1 John 3:8, is that Christ appears to destroy the works of the devil.. You know what Im saying? Its sort of spiritual entropy, so to speak. So that means the one thats going to be used for the more positive and holy purpose has to be pure, unblemished, no broken bones, not a runt, etc., but since it could be either, they both have to be that. Okay, so St. Matthew, he talks about Christ as being the goat that gets sent off to Azazel, right? Fr. Stephen: Yeah, I hope youve got a pigeon, a lamb, and a young ox.. [Laughter]. I am coming to understand that the Orthodox view is the correct one. Fr. Fr. You take it back.. We have to learn to think symbolically! [Laughter]. Amen. And then what happens next? So it starts with, as we talked about last time, the idea of sin-offeringsit starts with a sin-offering by the high priest and his immediate sons who are going to be serving with him; its the high priest and only the high priest and only on this day, who was going to actually go into what we now call the holy of holies or the sanctum sanctorum, if youre a Doctor Strange fan. Stephen: 1 Maccabees talks about the Battle of Emmaus. Fr. Fr. The blood of that goat is used to purify the sanctuary, to purify sacred space. So there are others, certainly Hebrews has a very detailed, and were going to Hebrews is going to be peppered throughout this half of the show, but it has a very detailed description and connection between Christ and the Day of Atonement ritual, as were going to see. This translation introduced a Jewish flavor into the text to make the Bible more Messianic. Later on in life Ive participated in everything from Passover Seders to Messianic services in an attempt to discover the Jewish roots of my faith. Photius, are you there? Fr. At first, it appears the book will address these questions, for Fr. Its not like magic wood that they went and found in the enchanted forest. Fr. They are teaching you and giving you the proclamation of Christ. Fr. Mr. Fr. So why isnt this more widely understood? Stephen is also the host of the Whole Counsel of God podcast from Ancient Faith and author of the Whole Counsel Blog. Mike Schmitz), Let's Read the Gospels with Annie F. Downs, Fr. Disclaimers, Pauls Works of the Law in the Perspective of Second Century Reception, by Matthew J. Thomas A Review, John the Presbyter: Eusebius Imaginary Friend. Hey, its the sin-goat!, Fr. Andrew: I feel like that could be on a t-shirt. Fr. Stephen: And are listening to that Mexican radio station that used to come through on my microphone. Stephen: Yeah, which brings it to I give and I take away, and I gave you your OED, Fr. I appreciate it. Andrew: Outside the camp, yeah. Its never going to catch on. Stephen: Yeah, weve covered a lot, and a lot of big stuff, so this one is kind of the hardest button to button. Andrew: Yeah, the GOATiest. So Ill take the heat for that one. Andrew: So its not like the Slavic word that has to do with a gross-tasting bubbling beverage, kefir? The Very Rev. Stephen: Yes, so allow me to feed that a little bit. Its sharing a meal with your god. You know who you are. The primary focus in this essay will be on The most significant biblical passage for the fallen angels tradition . So, it was good talking with you. Fr. So, in fact, youll see someIm trying to remember if the King James does thisa lot of older English biblical translations, instead of saying, They will choose a goat for Azazel, says, Its one for Yahweh and one for a scapegoat. And this is what theyre doing; theyre translating it rather than taking it as a name. So I think thats hopefully the important take-away, beyond all the fun stuff and interesting Bible tidbits; that this isnt just about knowing the right interpretation, thinking the right thing, but its about experiencing the reality of Christ. Stephen: Yeah, so I dont want to get too granular about this, because theres actually, when you get into literature about thisI did my dissertation related to this, so I read all the literature on this. But the basic idea is that, as Leviticus says elsewhere, that blood is life, the blood of an animal is its life, so sin, this taint of sin and corruption, is death. Stephen De Young The V. Rev. Fr. Fr. Andrew, or the Orthodox Church, or anyone else just coming and bashing on Western churches and saying, Ha ha ha! Dr. Stephen De Young is Pastor of Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church in Lafayette, Louisiana. Fr. Epiphanes? [Laughter]. And while they were driving the goat out, they would sort of mock the goat and spit at the goat as a sign of them rejecting their sins. . Stephen: Because that kind of response kind of begs the question, where its sort of like: Well, okay, what is St. Matthew talking about? Andrew: Okay, but these three things: wrapped around with a scarlet cord, being beaten with a reed to drive it out, mocked and spit upondoes that sound like anything to anybody? Photius in Texas. and he has to suffer now and get sacrificed! Like, thats not [Laughter] Thats not what the Scripture actually depicts. Stephen: When the subject of atonement comes up in most Western theological circles, this is where they go, is to Isaiah, specifically Isaiah 53:4-5, which has those famous lines about he was wounded by our transgressions; by his stripes we are healed, all of that language. This isnt just kind of Christians coming up with allegorical ways to read the Old Testament, to read Jesus into it. Theyre claiming some kind of economic theory of atonement here! Yeah, no. Welcome! And if hes of Azazel, this one whos teaching this forbidden knowledge, then hes doing the works of his father, so to speak; hes imaging Azazel. Fr. Fr. ,The Whole Counsel of God: An Introduction to Your Bible And, one way or another, thats going to kill the goat. https://t.co/vM0ulUmY0s, More than Schooling: The Perils of Pragmatism in Christian Attitudes Toward the Liberal Arts by Robin Phillips https://t.co/wh5X6dP63s, A post shared by Robin Phillips (@robin__phillips), Nine Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Parenting Teenagers, Barbados Sea Turtles and the Desire For God, G.K. Chesterton and the Sacramental Imagination, Interview with Ancient Faith about Gratitude in Lifes Trenches, The AI Apocalypse is Happening Right Nowbut not in the way you think, Virtue and Classical Education: A Commencement Address to a Graduating Class, understand ancient texts through the lens of their original context. He preferred the terminology for the sacrament of the Lords Supper in order to present it as a meal,1 which he saw as standing in sharp contrast to the sacrificial conception.2 While Calvin himself consistently maintained that the Eucharist represented a real sacramental communion in the body and blood of Christ, this disassociation of sacrament and sacrifice led much of later Protestantism to reject even the sacramentality of the rite. Someone could stand there and say, Hes turning the page; what does that mean? Stephen? Hes wrapped about with a scarlet, Fr. Stephen: Right. Now, this doesnt mean, like, he was Santa, keeping a list all year, like the high priest was going around spying on people and seeing all the stuff they did and writing it down. Fr. So the first thing the high priest has to do is he has to, in order to prepare to enter the space, offer a whole ton of incensenot a little, not one scoop. The definition is not as simple as it may seem, since some may employ it metaphorically such as referring to a giant of industry. Hes coming; we have to get ready. Stephen: So both of them have to be perfect and unblemished, because theyre going to be used for two different purposes, but which one is used for which purpose is decided by lot. Andrew: Yeah, and most Semitic languages work this way, so if any of our listeners are Arabic-speakers, which I know some are, its again those three consonants make up pretty much every word in Arabic. Fr. Fr. [Laughter]. Stephen holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Amridge University. [Laughter] How many times have we said now: The killing is not ritualized in any way? Andrew: Right, because, again, what is sacrifice? It doesnt say that it was fulfilled by Jesus absorbing their diseases and becoming sick, or absorbing their demons and becoming possessed himself; he doesnt take it on himself in that way. Stephen: Were going to talk about this more in the second half, but Azazel, this spirit, is seen as sort of the source of sin and corruption that has come into the camp, and so its basically being sent back to it. Well, okay, so theres a little bit of backstory here, and again, Luke, using this detail about Christ being on the road to Emmaushes actually on the road to Emmaus, but everyone knows what Emmaus is famous for. This is. But thats how granular we get. Fr. Theyre continually in the Temple, praising and blessing God. Fr. Fr. Many people dive into discussions about giants without defining the key term: Just what is a giant? I think thats a net loss to you, frankly. The whole goat is burned after the blood is extracted. Fr. Fr. Fr. Whats the deal with this super-big day of offering? Stephen: And so Antiochus IV EpiphanesEpiphanes meant he was the manifestation of a god on earth. Stephen: Yeah, youre rubbing it into a bunch of people. So, just what is a giant? Fr. Fr. Fr. Fr. Fr. Theyre not out in the wilderness; theyre not encamping in tents. In God Is a Man of War, Fr. But the much simpler way to read it is it just means cover. Stephen: And youll see it in even Orthodox translations, because a lot of our early Orthodox translations were either utilizing or aping the King James Version language, and so you can kind of see how you can get there, like if you go from a very developed theological idea, where you dont really know what the Hebrew word means, so youre thinking, Well, okay, God is enthroned behind the ark of the covenant, between the cherubim. Wow. Stephen: So the whole thing is burned. I dont think theyre such long questions. Fr. Andrew: Yeah, right! Andrew: Yeah, and some people out there are probably like: Why are they emphasizing this? And the reason is that a lot of Reformation theology kind of hangs on the idea that the goat is being punished, that the goat does have But, again, look what it says. Stephen: This goat-spirit of the wilderness is then picked up in a lot of later imagery, probably the most famous being Baphomet, this sort of Satan-figure or devil-figure. Were going to see, to tip our hatsspoilersthat in the New Testament, Christ is both goats. Theres not enough books in the world. So theyre choosing how to describe things and what details to include in order to convey this. The ark of the covenant is like a footstool, so theres a throne involved there, and were thinking of atonement as at-one-ment and peace and mercy. So you come up with this mercy-seat thing. And so then, logically enough, when you find this in its noun formthese same roots are used for both verbs and nouns and also for adjectiveswhen its a noun it means a cover or a covering. So it had this prominence beyond those other books. And its interesting: I recently heard a certainhe identifies as a Protestant, but most Protestants would not identify him as a Protestantbiblical scholar talking about atonement, and who tried to read St. Athanasiuss On the Incarnation and just said, I cant tell what hes doing in terms of his In terms of trying to address it in terms of atonement theory. The A-Team. [Laughter] No, theyve got to both be great. Stephen: No, it has nothing to do with that. He holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from Amridge University and is the host of the The Whole Counsel of God podcast and co-host of the Lord of Spirits podcast on Ancient Faith Radio. Stephen: Actually, it was sprinkled with the finger, so the high priest would have a bowl in which the blood was collected, and he smears it with his finger on pretty much everything but the ark. Stephen De Young and Fr. Fr. Stephen shows convincingly that, as far as world religions go, Judaism is the newest kid on the block, having originated in the 6th century. God Is a Man of War offers a fresh interpretation of Old Testament accounts of violence by exploring them through the twofold lens of Orthodox tradition and historical context. Well, the text doesnt actually say how many there were; there were three gifts. Stephen De Young, and Ancient Faith Ministries, Fr. So hes using atonement in this biblical sense weve been talking about, of purification, but Christ does it by living it. She would therefore have passed her DNA to some of her children (especially to her son Canaan) and later descendants, so that individuals of large size and/or psychopathic behavior could therefore reappear later in history. how do i see through ios markup, utd spring 2022 application deadline,
